Insurance before picking up a used car

Questions to ask about insurance before you drive a used car home. Rules differ by state, and the seller’s policy usually protects the seller.

Ask what must be in place before you drive

Before you pick the car up, ask your insurer whether the vehicle must be listed, when coverage starts, and what proof you may need to show. Get that answer from the insurer, not from the seller’s guess.

The seller’s policy is for the seller

It usually protects the person who bought that policy. Treat it as theirs. If you need coverage for the drive, ask your own insurer what they can put in place and when it begins.

Registration and the drive are different questions

Driving the car and registering or titling it can have different proof requirements. Those requirements depend on the state. This page does not state a universal legal rule.

Questions worth saving

When does coverage start? Is this car listed? What proof do I need to drive and to register? Which deductible applies? A licensed agent can answer from the policy they are offering. Coveroo does not bind that policy.

Does the seller’s insurance cover me?

A seller’s policy is written for the seller. Do not assume it covers you once you drive the car. Ask your insurer when your coverage would begin and whether the car must be listed first.

Do I need proof of insurance to drive it home?

Many states require proof of insurance to drive or register a car. The rule is not the same everywhere, so ask your state motor vehicle agency and your insurer before you rely on a general article.
